Question: What estimate he has made of the number of CCTV cameras which have been installed in town centres since the Government's CCTV Challenge Competition in 1996. (Failed OPQ)

Answer: Sir Colin Shepherd: To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what estimate he has made of the number of CCTV cameras that have been installed in town centres since the Government's CCTV challenge competition in 1996. [10561] Mr. Kirkhope: The first two rounds of the closed circuit television challenge competition produced 365 winners. Around 45 of the 259 round 2 winners which were announced in June 1996 are already operational. The systems involve 450 cameras. The remainder, with around 2,800 more cameras, should become operational over the coming months.
