Mr. John Marshall: To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the number of asylum seekers in February (a) 1996 and (b) 1997. [21271] Mr. Kirkhope: A total of 2,850 applications for asylum in the United Kingdom were lodged in February 1996. The number in February 1997 was 1,985.
