Answer

Mr. Chris Davies: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment if she will provide public funding to support (a) the Scout Association and (b) the Girl Guides; and if she will make a statement. [14997] Mr. Paice: Both the Scout Association and the Girl Guides receive funding through the Department's scheme of grants for national voluntary youth organisations. The current scheme runs from 1996-99. For 1997-98, £3.05 million had been allocated for grants under the scheme including £125,000 for the Scout Association and £40,855 for the Girl Guides. All grants are for approved programmes of work designed to promote the personal and social education of young people.
