Mr. Dalyell: To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what plans he has to issue guidelines to producers of sanitary products in respect of labelling relating to their proper disposal. [12490] Mr. Clappison: Guidance on how to dispose of sanitary products will be included in the revised version of "Waste management Paper 25 (Clinical Waste)". The Environment Agency, which is responsible for drawing up this paper, is expected to consult industry on it in summer 1997. This consultation will include manufacturers of sanitary products. Many existing manufacturers have already revised the disposal instructions on their products either to recommend waste bins as an appropriate alternative disposal option to flushing, or to advise positively against flushing.
