Answer

Mrs. Ann Winterton: To ask the Secretary of State for Health what representations he has received regarding links between levels of dietary salt consumption and the incidence of hypertension. [29328] Ms Jowell: We have received a letter from the Salt Manufacturers' Association. The Department asked the Faculty of Public Health Medicine, with the British Heart Foundation, to host a seminar to bring together a wide spread of scientific opinion to consider whether a reduction in salt consumption for the general population is advisable. A report is expected later this year.
