Answer: Mr. Townend: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what was the total cost to public funds of claims by employees and the public for compensation in respect of (a) personal injury and (b) employment protection in the last year for which figures are available. [59051] Mr. Mudie: During the 1997-98 financial year the Department made compensation payments totalling (a) £232,197 in respect of personal injury claims and (b) £70,804 in respect of employment protection claims.
