Question: To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, what was the total cost to public funds of claims by employees and the public for compensation in respect of (a) personal injury and (b) employment protection in the latest year for which figures are available. - Inc figs.

Answer: Mr. Townend: To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what was the total cost to public funds of claims by employees and the public for compensation in respect of (a) personal injury and (b) employment protection in the latest year for which figures are available. [59056] Mr. Fatchett: We settled a total of five such claims made by our employees or former employees in 1997. The costs were £8,053.43 for three personal injury claims and £17,930.25 for two claims relating to employment protection. There were no claims in respect of the public.
