Question: To ask the Secretary of State for Health, what was the total cost to public funds of claims by employees and the public for compensation in respect of (a) personal injury and (b) employment protection in the latest year for which figures are available. - Figures given.

Answer: Mr. Townend: To ask the Secretary of State for Health what was the total cost to public funds of claims by employees and the public for compensation in respect of (a) personal injury and (b) employment protection in the latest year for which figures are available. [59055] Mr. Hutton: In the twelve month period ending 31 October 1998, the total cost to Departmental funds of claims by employees and the public was £44,922.25 in respect of claims for personal injury and £18,800 in respect of compensation awarded to employees or ex-employees of the department as a result of proceedings in the Civil Service Appeal Board or the Employment Tribunal.
