Answer

Mr. Chidgey: To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what discussions he has had with (1) the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and (2) the Department for International Development about the impact of the Export Forum's recommended target markets on their policies with regard to (i) development and (ii) democratisation in (a) Eastern Europe, (b) Africa and (c) South America. [53463] Mr. Wilson: [holding answer 31 July 1998]: Although the Department works closely with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Department for International Development it has had no discussions with either on these issues. The Export Forum's recommendations for target markets related solely to their potential for the promotion of exports and had no bearing on the government's policies on development and democratisation.
