Answer: Mr. Barry Jones: To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what is his estimate of the number of (a) science and (b) mathematics teachers in (i) primary and (ii) secondary schools in Wales. [49562] Mr. Hain: The latest available information indicates that, in 1996, there were an estimated 2,800 full-time teachers qualified to teach mathematics and 2,700 qualified to teach science at Key stage 3 and at Key stage 4. Comparable information is not available on primary schools.
