Dept of the Environment Transport and the Regions

Question
To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions, what funding his Department will be providing for local authority Safe Routes to School initiatives in Gloucestershire. - Inc figs.
Answer

Mr. Nigel Jones: To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what funding his Department will be providing for local authority Safe Routes to School initiatives in Gloucestershire. [50058] Dr. Strang: Funds are not normally earmarked for `Safer Routes to School' initiatives. In the 1998-99 Local Transport Capital Settlement, my Department allocated Gloucestershire County Council £700,000 for minor works in Cheltenham and Gloucester package areas. The Council has the freedom to use these resources for Safer Routes to School if it wishes. As bids for funding 1999-2000 are not due until the end of this month it is too early to say how much Gloucestershire will have at its disposal for Safer Routes to School in that year.
