To ask the President of the Board of Trade, if she will list the food science research contracts allocated by the BBSRC in 1997-98 broken down by (a) length of contract, (b) value of contract and (c) institution securing the contract. - Inc figs and ref to 309 c565-66W, 1 April 1998, and list of awards (in Library).

Mr. Charles Clarke: To ask the President of the Board of Trade if she will list the food science research contracts allocated by the BBSRC in 1997-98 broken down by (a) length of contract, (b) value of contract and (c) institution securing the contract. [37950] Mr. Battle: [holding answer 6 April 1998]: The BBSRC awards a competitive strategic grant (CSG) to the Institute of Food Research (IFR) annually. The figure for 1997-98 was £8,617k, including additions for superannuation, and reductions for MAFF transitional arrangements. Unfortunately, in answer to your previous question on 1 April 1998, Official Report, Columns 565-566, the figures for the BBSRC competitive strategic grant to the Institute of Food Research for 1994-95, 1995-96 and 1996-97 were wrongly stated. The correct information is: 1994-95: £7,497k 1995-96: £7,697k 1996-97: £8,187k. The CSG is used by the Institute to fund research projects within BBSRC's remit. A list of projects started between April and August 1997 have been placed in the Library of the House; the length of each project is also provided. Typically one third of the projects funded from the CSG change each year; at 1 April 1997 therefore the CSG was already being used to fund a large body of research, details of which are not included in this answer. In 1997-98, IFR also won a number of BBSRC ROPA awards. The total amount awarded, the projects and their duration have been placed in the Library of the House. In addition BBSRC awards grants for food research to universities and other higher education institutions through the usual Research Council responsive mode procedures. A list of new awards in 1997-98 have been placed in the Library of the House; the lists show the total amount awarded by institution, and the titles and duration of the individual projects.
