To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions, how many district auditors' public interest reports were published last year; and on which local authorities. - Includes figure and list.
Answer

Mr. Oaten: To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions how many district auditors' public interest reports were published last year; and on which local authorities. [30306] Mr. Raynsford: I understand from the Audit Commission that during 1997 district auditors published a total of twenty public interest reports. The local authorities concerned were: Allerdale Borough Council Bassetlaw District Council Bristol City Council Bath and North East Somerset Council Coggeshall Parish Council Denbighshire County Council Doncaster MBC Hemsworth Town Council Hertfordshire County Council Lambeth LBC Middlesborough Borough Council Newark and Sherwood District Council Nottinghamshire County Council Redbridge LBC St. Neots Town Council Sheffield City Council Walsall MBC Waltham Forest LBC West Wiltshire District Council Whitworth Town Council.
