- To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment, what plans he had for extending school days to accommodate the requirement for an hour a day to be given to numeracy and literacy.

Mrs. Organ: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what plans he has for extending school days to accommodate the requirement for an hour a day to be given to numeracy and literacy. [24165] Mr. Byers: The length of the School day is a matter for decision by the governing body of each school. Following my right hon. Friend's announcement on 13 January, schools will have flexibility in the primary curriculum to devote an hour a day to numeracy and literacy within the existing school day.
