Question: To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, what assessment he has made of the impact on (a) the economic position of British pig farmers and (b) animal welfare of his proposals for a reduction in domestic pig production. - (Holding answer 27 November 2000).

Answer: Mr. Yeo: To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what assessment he has made of the impact on (a) the economic position of British pig farmers and (b) animal welfare of his proposals for a reduction in domestic pig production. [140204] Mr. Nick Brown: [holding answer 27 November 2000]: I have made no proposals for a reduction in current British pig production. On the contrary, I believe the market can absorb the present level of domestic pig production and this is reflected in the fact that our market price is some 15 to 20 per cent. higher than the EU average.
