Answer

Mr. Portillo: To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security (1) how many new personal pension schemes were set up in each year from 1979 to 1999; [122356] (2) how many new occupational pension schemes were set up in each year from 1979 to 1996. [122355] Mr. Rooker: The information is in the table. _________________________________________________________________________________________________. Year Occupational pension schemes Personal pension schemes 1979 4,764 0 1980 4,671 0 1981 4,618 0 1982 5,705 0 1983 6,743 0 1984 8,606 0 1985 10,945 0 1986 11,009 0 1987 12,394 0 1988 22,162 161 1989 11,469 32 1990 7,779 13 1991 11,112 22 1992 8,104 12 1993 6,583 4 1994 7,501 2 1995 6,578 7 1996 8,311 16 1997 6,133 15 1998 4,939 21 1999 3,170 11 Total 173,296 316 _________________________________________________________________________________________________. Notes: 1. Scheme numbers are only part of the picture. More importantly, around 60 per cent. of employees currently have some form of non-state pension, either an occupational pension or a personal pension. In due course, numbers of people with non-state pensions should increase once stakeholder pensions are launched. 2. Personal pension schemes were introduced in 1988.
