Question: To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, what percentage of the UK steel market is controlled by Corus. - Inc figures.

Answer: Mr. MacShane: To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what percentage of the UK steel market is controlled by Corus. [149357] Mr. Byers: The UK steel market is open and competitive and not subject to control by individual companies. Corus does not release figures showing its share of the UK market but in the year 2000 UK demand for steel mill products was 13.8 million tonnes of which 53 per cent. (7.3 million tonnes) was supplied from UK steel mills. We estimate that 90 per cent. of this was produced by Corus.
