Mrs. Curtis-Thomas: To ask the Solicitor-General what inquiries are being held by the CPS concerning the measures needed to enable vulnerable or intimidated witnesses to give their best evidence. [60228] The Solicitor-General: [holding answer 10 June 2002]: The Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Act 1999 provides for special measures to be made available to vulnerable or intimidated witnesses to enable them to give their best evidence. The Government has announced that these measures are to be introduced on a phased basis from 24 July 2002. The CPS is not holding any inquiries on these measures, but Areas are having discussions with their partner agencies in the Criminal Justice System to ensure both the effective implementation of the special measures and that appropriate action is taken where a witness is vulnerable or intimidated.
