Mr. Andrew Turner: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Skills how much grant was paid to higher education students in 1979. [32731] Margaret Hodge: [holding answer 1 February 2002]: The total amount paid in maintenance grants in academic year 1978-79 was £272 million (cash terms). There were 320,000 eligible higher education students, which equates to an average maintenance grant of £850 per student.
