Question: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Skills, for what reasons data on pupil attendance is not published for pupil referral units.

Answer: Mr. Hoban: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Skills for what reasons data on pupil attendance are not published for pupil referral units. [196996] Mr. Stephen Twigg: While providers of alternative provision have a common law duty of care to ensure the health, safety and welfare of a pupil, there is no legislation requiring them to keep attendance records. As a result, the Department can neither collect nor publish data on pupil attendance at pupil referral units or other alternative provision.
