To ask Mr Chancellor of the Exchequer, how many (a) men and (b) women died of cancer in England and Wales in the last 12 months. - Including table and text of letter from Len Cook of the Office for National Statistics.

Tom Cox: To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many (a) men and (b) women died of cancer in England and Wales in the last 12 months. [195926] Mr. Timms: The information requested falls within the responsibility of the National Statistician, who has been asked to reply. Letter from Len Cook to Mr. Tom Cox, dated 8 November 2004: As National Statistician I have been asked to reply to your recent question asking how many (a) men and (b) women died of cancer in England and Wales in the last 12 months. (195926) The latest year for which data are available is 2003. Figures on the numbers of deaths due to cancer are shown in the table below for that year. Number of deaths where the underlying cause of death was cancer1 by sex in England and Wales, 2003 2 _________________________________________________________________________________________________. All ages Aged 15 and over (a) Males 70,814 70,663 (b) Females 65,141 65,010 _________________________________________________________________________________________________. 1 The cause of death was defined using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) codes C00- C97. 2 Number of deaths occurring in the calendar year.
