To ask the Secretary of State for Health, pursuant to his Answer of 14th February, Official Report, 344 c387W, what attempts his Department has made to link data from the birth registration system with the data from the Hospital Episode Statistics in order to provide data of the type requested.

Audrey Wise: To ask the Secretary of State for Health, pursuant to his answer of 14 February 2000, Official Report, column 387W, what attempts his Department has made to link data from the birth registration system with the data from the Hospital Episode Statistics in order to provide data of the type requested. [113094] Yvette Cooper: Discussions are currently taking place between officials from the Department and the Office for National Statistics and a pilot study has been proposed to investigate the feasibility of linking data from the Office for National Statistics birth registration records to Hospital Episode Statistics birth records.
