Question: To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, how many special constables have been injured in the line of duty since 1st January 2001. - Inc figures.

Answer: Mr. Bailey: To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many special constables have been injured in the line of duty since 1 January 2001. [207292] Ms Blears: Information on the outcome of assaults on special constables has been collected centrally since 1 April 2002. For the period 1 April 2002 to 31 March 2004, there were 318 assaults on special constables which resulted in seven of them being seriously injured. The remaining 311 special constables suffered minor or no injury. Serious injuries are defined as those resulting from assaults for which the charge would be under Sections 18 and 20 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861.
