Identity Cards Bill

I will not give way, but as the hon. Gentleman as raised the issue on many occasions I shall give him one instance of a serious crime that identity cards could help to prevent. Last week, on Tuesday 11 October, Metro revealed that a fraudster who created 130 false identities to swindle hundreds of banks out £1.1 million was jailed for five and a half years. Identity fraud is not a figment of our imagination—it is a real problem that affects more and more of my constituents and perhaps the hon. Gentleman’s too. The issue is repeatedly brought to our attention, so it is right to take action against it.
