Proceeding contribution from Tony Baldry (Conservative) in the House of Commons on Thursday, 17 November 2005. It occurred during Adjournment debate on Rehabilitation of Prisoners.
Rehabilitation of Prisoners
: Whether the figure is 10, 11 or 12 per cent., it is a significant percentage. We should make it clear that the burden will be on overseas nationals who have committed offences to convince the courts that they should not automatically be deported to the country of their citizenship at the end of their sentence. Then, if they are inclined to reoffend, they are less likely to reoffend in the United Kingdom. It is as simple as that. Any foreign national who breaks the law in this country such that it merits their going to prison forfeits their right to remain in the country. Much good work is being done with the rest of the prison population.
