Proceeding contribution from David Drew (Labour) in the House of Commons on Thursday, 16 March 2006. It occurred during Adjournment debate on Quadripartite Committee Reports.
Quadripartite Committee Reports
My hon. Friend is making a compelling case. I and a number of other Members are desperately worried about cluster munitions. I am of the view that they should be banned outright, and that they are no different from land mines, but I know that the Government have a different view. That is an area where there is a need for robust controls. In this regard, the relationship with the European Union is interesting, and Belgium has announced that it intends to ban the use of cluster munitions. It would pain me to know that our country was in any way responsible for the export of such munitions. Will my hon. Friend use that as an example—next year perhaps—to look at what this country does? We signed up to the Ottawa convention on land mines. Does he agree that we should be following that through by at least ensuring that we do not export weapons of terrible cruelty that we could do something to control?
