moved Amendment No. 51:"Page 8, line 28, leave out ““fifth”” and insert ““eleventh””" The noble Lord said: This simple amendment is grouped with Amendment No. 52. It seeks to clarify the dates on which the electoral register is altered in the run-up to elections. The amendment will coincide the date on which the register must be changed with the final deadline for submitting applications. Perhaps it would make more sense to allow one day in lieu, but the point is still the same. We welcome bringing the deadline for applying to be on the register back by a few days. It will ensure that EROs have enough time to deal with errors on the register and in applications. It will also provide EROs with a longer window of time between the finalisation of the register and polling day in which to carry out their other duties, and, hopefully, persuade people to vote et cetera.
