Proceeding contribution from Lord Rooker (Labour) in the House of Lords on Wednesday, 22 March 2006. It occurred during Debates on delegated legislation on Northern Ireland Act 2000 (Modification) Order 2006.
Northern Ireland Act 2000 (Modification) Order 2006
I shall give one or two other examples of north-south co-operation. We are moving towards implementing a scheme that will provide all-Ireland concessionary travel for pensioners on public transport. Working through the UK and Irish telecoms regulators, we have made significant progress towards eliminating the inadvertent mobile phone roaming charges, which is a serious and annoying issue in the border area. We are providing Northern Ireland radiotherapy services to patients in the north-west of the republic, a service that will be in place and treating patients before the end of this year. We are exploring ways of developing the island of Ireland as a world centre of excellence in renewable energy. There are some issues, but if we can, and I make no apology for this, we will speed up the co-operation where we can make a good case for it for the benefit of both parties.
