Proceeding contribution from David Heath (Liberal Democrat) in the House of Commons on Wednesday, 29 March 2006. It occurred during Debate on bill on Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Bill 2005-06.

Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Bill

I particularly welcome your comments, Mr. Deputy Speaker, as there is a risk of our not reaching some important business. We had a useful diversion into the dissemination of information to businesses, which is extremely important but is not the matter before us. If businesses are not sure of the law, that will act as a deterrent to the employment of people whose immigration status is unclear in the mind of an employer. The Minister invited us to accept his assurance that the amendments were technical. I have not the slightest intention of accepting an assurance from the Minister that amendments are ever technical. What I am prepared to do is look at the amendments and take a view. My view is that the amendments are technical, and welcome.
