I did not overrule the chief electoral officer in that instance; I hope that that helps to meet the hon. Gentleman’s concerns. The Government believe that the provisions will protect the integrity of the electoral register, while doing as much as possible to allow individuals to register much nearer the date of an election.I hope that that will reassure the hon. Lady. I am taking advice from the professional officer who is paid to secure the integrity of the electoral register. He has expressed his view that if we accepted the amendments, we would open up the potential for fraud in the postal vote system.
