Proceeding contribution from Evan Harris (Liberal Democrat) in the House of Commons on Thursday, 20 April 2006. It occurred during Adjournment debate on Forensic Science.
Forensic Science
I agree with everything that my hon. Friend has said so far, but does not he agree that the problem with the Government is that they see higher education as a free market? If students want to study a course because they have seen something on television, or for any other reason, that is what universities will provide. The Government do not seem to have any interest in ensuring a flow of students through the courses that this country needs them to study. The Government's only hope is that the BBC or some other channel produce a programme called ““Silent Chemist””, or something, which is exciting and encourages people to study chemistry. There is no proper public policy or stewardship of public finances, and they are not looking after the future graduate needs of this country.
