Independent Sector Treatment Centres

With the leave of the House, I want to thank everyone who has taken part in the debate, particularly my hon. Friend the Member for City of York (Hugh Bayley), who has brought further evidence to us about ISTCs. I wish him well with his pursuit of the National Audit Office. I shall watch it carefully as it might be a means of getting information that we sometimes find it difficult to obtain as a Committee. Although I agree with many of the things that the hon. Member for Westbury (Dr. Murrison) said, paragraph 64 of our report states that the British Orthopaedic Association"““conceded that its evidence was anecdotal, and argued for more rigorous auditing of the work done in ISTCs.””" We agreed with that. In respect of what the hon. Gentleman read out from the press release from Angus Wallace, it was agreed that that was anecdotal. We went on:"““Similarly, the BMA alluded to concerns about surgical standards””—" and so on—"““but admitted that there was not sufficient data to reach a satisfactory conclusion on the matter.””" I have here a letter that has been copied to me and was sent to the chief medical officer by the BOA. It looks as thought the association might have some evidence for us on the matter, and we will go to their congress in September. The greater problem is that Angus Wallace and—
