Proceeding contribution from Baroness Smith of Basildon (Labour) in the House of Commons on Thursday, 7 June 2007. It occurred during Adjournment debate on Coastal Towns.
Coastal Towns
I hope that the hon. Gentleman will forgive me if I do not give way. I only have seven minutes left and I do want to respond to all hon. Members who have spoken. Additional funding was mentioned. I have difficulty with that because funding is going to coastal areas. Hon. Members may think that it is not enough or want different allocations, but under the local enterprise growth initiative, Great Yarmouth got £8.6 million over three years; Hastings, which includes Bexhill, got £3.9 million over three years; in the second round, Blackpool got £10.8 million over three years; and North Lincolnshire got £18.7 million over three years. Those are important contributions to encouraging enterprise and growth. The new deal for communities—[Interruption.] If my hon. Friend the Member for Cleethorpes had listened, she would know that I was careful to say that I want to respond to all the points made. Because of time constraints, I cannot name all the areas involved in the new deal for communities funding and the neighbourhood management pathfinders, but a number of coastal areas—Brighton, Plymouth and Southampton—have benefited from significant amounts of money through the new deal for communities. In Brighton some £43 million has been spent to date, and there is a £48 million potential 10-year allocation for Brighton. The amounts are similar in relation to Southampton and Plymouth—[Interruption.] Hon. Members may not like the figures, but they cannot deny the amount of money—
