Proceeding contribution from Ian Pearson (Labour) in the House of Commons on Monday, 7 July 2008. It occurred during Estimates day on Science Budget.
Science Budget
I agree that, in all such cases, it is matter of balance. However, I remind my hon. Friend and the House that the Government are committed to investment in basic research. That underpins the later commercial exploitation of research. As he knows, we support some of that commercialisation and applied research and development through, for example, the Energy Technologies Institute and especially the activities of the Technology Strategy Board, which will spend, in co-ordination with the research councils and the regional development agencies, £1 billion in the next three years.
