Proceeding contribution from Geoffrey Clifton-Brown (Conservative) in the House of Commons on Thursday, 3 September 2009. It occurred during Grand Committee proceedings (HC) on Economic Downturn (Unemployment).

Economic Downturn (Unemployment)

My hon. Friend pre-empts what I am about to say. I am worried by the Government’s introduction of more and more quangos and more and more government in this country. The heading of the second page of the South West Councils document reads, ““SW Regional Improvement and Efficiency Partnership (SW RIEP)””, although the acronym should read ““RIP””. The page’s penultimate paragraph demonstrates that we are getting more and more quangos. It says: ““Through the RIEP, SW Councils are supporting a ‘SW Sustainable Procurement Network’ which will provide information, training and support to””— wait for it!— ““South West public sector bodies.”” Here we have a new body created to advise yet more public sector bodies—I rest my case. Time will tell whether this Committee is going to do a useful job or not. I issue my challenge to the Minister to produce a positive result within one month.
