Proceeding contribution from Lord Coaker (Labour) in the House of Commons on Wednesday, 21 July 2010. It occurred during Debate on bill and Committee of the Whole House (HC) on Academies Bill [Lords].
Academies Bill [Lords]
Perhaps the hon. Gentleman would like to table an amendment to provide that schools choosing such a route must consult parents and the local community, and that any application for such status should depend on not only the head teacher and the governing body, but the broader community, particularly parents. I take his point that parents are always important in education, but that applies particularly to parents of pupils in special schools. They are especially dependent on not only the support that the schools give the young person, whom they have the responsibility of educating, but the emotional advice and support that they often give parents, sometimes in very difficult circumstances. If the hon. Gentleman thinks that that is important, why does not he amend the Bill to make it a requirement that schools taking the route that he suggests consult parents? It should not be a case of a whimsical, ββIt's good practice if you do that, it'll be in the funding agreement.ββ Let us have a bit of clarity about what is expected from such a radical reform.
