Proceeding contribution from Lord Trimble (Conservative) in the House of Lords on Monday, 17 January 2011. It occurred during Committee of the Whole House (HL) and Debate on bill on Parliamentary Voting System and Constituencies Bill.

Parliamentary Voting System and Constituencies Bill

I apologise to cut short the noble Lord’s apologies, but I wanted to come in before he sat down. I found myself in considerable agreement with the comments that he was making about the consequences for Parliament as a whole if we find changes to this House rushed through this House in the way that he mentioned. I want to put this point to him: does he appreciate that the consequence that he warns against is made much more likely if, in this House, there is a determined campaign to obstruct the primary legislative project of the present Government, and that the Opposition at the moment are getting dangerously close to that territory? The Opposition need to consider the unintended consequences, such as the noble Lord has mentioned, of their current behaviour.
