Proceeding contribution from Lord Butler of Brockwell (Crossbench) in the House of Lords on Thursday, 20 January 2011. It occurred during Debate on Coalition Government.
Coalition Government
I agree with the first point that the noble Lord made, but I point out to him that the House then accepted the convention that the Executive ought to get their legislation. Even in this new situation, that convention should still apply. With regard to that Government not having a majority in this House, the Government do not have an overall majority in this House now. It is important that that should continue to be the situation. I remind the noble Lord that since the general election there have been eight or nine times when the Government have been defeated by votes in your Lordships’ House.
