Proceeding contribution from Lord Selsdon (Conservative) in the House of Lords on Wednesday, 19 January 2011. It occurred during Debate on bill and Committee of the Whole House (HL) on Parliamentary Voting System and Constituencies Bill.
Parliamentary Voting System and Constituencies Bill
I was not suggesting anything about other islands. This debate is about the Isle of Wight. The thing about an island community is that, when you connect it to a mainland politically, you create divisions. Even within an island, when you split it—as in Cyprus or any of the other islands in the world—you create divisions. You need a united community, which can be united only if it has the sea around it. Therefore, I support the amendment. I also feel that there is something quite remarkable about what my noble friend Lord Mackay has done. He has taken the heat out of the debate. We are all debating on the same side. Yes, noble Lords opposite will want to protect certain constituencies and claim that they are all of one ethnic group or different ethnic groups, but communities are communities. Island communities are—I promise you—individual communities. I therefore support the amendment. I encourage the noble Lord who moved it to press it to a Division and I will vote, because it is about time that we had a vote on something worth voting on.
