Proceeding contribution from Baroness May of Maidenhead (Conservative) in the House of Commons on Tuesday, 1 March 2011. It occurred during Debate on bill on Protection of Freedoms Bill.
Protection of Freedoms Bill
I am very happy to intervene again on the right hon. Lady, but may I just correct her on one thing? I have not changed the policy. The policy remains exactly as it was, and the Bill remains exactly as it was. A misinterpretation of what was in the Bill has led to the comments from the NSPCC, which, as I said, is one of the children's charities to which my hon. Friend the Minister has been speaking today. In the circumstances that the right hon. Lady outlines, the fact of the barring will not be available to the employer, but the information that led to the decision on the barring will be available to the employer. We take a slightly different position from that of the right hon. Lady and her party—that the employer must then take some responsibility for making a decision as to whom it is appropriate to have potentially dealing with children in the classroom concerned.
