Proceeding contribution from Andy Slaughter (Labour) in the House of Commons on Wednesday, 2 March 2011. It occurred during Estimates day on Sure Start Children's Centres.
Sure Start Children's Centres
In the last Parliament, the hon. Gentleman and I served together on the Select Committee and I respect his opinion. He has touched on the key question. The Government are cutting the funding to my local authority by about 13% and they say that leaves enough money to keep the network open, but the local authority is cutting by 45%, which clearly will not leave enough, so the majority of centres will close. In such a situation should the Government intervene or should there be localism at its purest, and if the local authority wants to close down most of the centres it should be allowed to do so?
