I acknowledge the experience that the hon. Gentleman brings to these debates from his former shadow policing role. He challenged me to produce evidence of where this approach was not wanted, so may I refer him to the Liberty polling evidence produced a few months ago? I cannot remember the exact month when this was produced, but when people were asked who they would trust more to protect their family from crime, 65% said:"““A Chief Constable reporting to a Police Authority, as now””." Some 15% said that they would prefer:"““A Chief Constable reporting to an individual politician elected as a Police and Crime Commissioner””." There is some evidence for him.
