Proceeding contribution from Baroness Ritchie of Downpatrick (Social Democratic & Labour Party) in the House of Commons on Tuesday, 1 November 2011. It occurred during Adjournment debate on Youth Employment.

Youth Employment

Thank you, Dr McCrea, and I could not agree more, but the right hon. Member for Belfast North is mistaken in his assertions. My hon. Friend the Member for Foyle was not referring to that issue in the address that he gave in Oxford or Cambridge, but to cross-community voting. I agree that many of the issues go back to deep-seated problems in our education system and the myriad social and historical problems that have exacerbated that over time. For example, one in every five children leaves primary school without proper literacy and numeracy skills, which can be directly correlated to levels of economic inactivity later on, because such people are not, unfortunately, properly equipped to undertake skills and training. That is a deficit that we, in many instances, are responsible for.
