Proceeding contribution from Baroness Ritchie of Downpatrick (Social Democratic & Labour Party) in the House of Commons on Tuesday, 1 November 2011. It occurred during Adjournment debate on Youth Employment.

Youth Employment

I thank the hon. Gentleman for his useful intervention. I have no doubt that collaborative partnership working between all the stakeholders, both in the private and public sectors, will help bring us to a better place. Hopefully, that will help to secure better employment opportunities for our young people, but there is no doubt that skills, training and better educational opportunities will put our young people in a better, more fit state to gain gainful employment. We must not forget that there are many impediments at the moment—the economic downturn, for example—that have resulted in a dilution of employment opportunities and young people leaving our land and going to places, such as Australia and New Zealand, where they would not have gone in the past.
