Proceeding contribution from Lord Swire (Conservative) in the House of Commons on Tuesday, 1 November 2011. It occurred during Adjournment debate on Youth Employment.
Youth Employment
I agree with the hon. Gentleman. I have been to a number of these loyalist, working-class estates myself, and I have seen first hand what he is referring to. It is a very real concern. The easy answer is that the levers to do anything are not in the hands of Westminster Ministers; they are in local politicians’ hands. We stand ready to work with local Ministers, when invited so to do, to try to help better things. I say to the hon. Gentleman that my door is always open, as is the Secretary of State’s. Part of our role is to help, without trespassing on what is properly devolved territory.
