Proceeding contribution from Lord Hammond of Runnymede (Conservative) in the House of Commons on Thursday, 26 January 2012. It occurred during Backbench debate on Strategic Defence and Security Review.
Strategic Defence and Security Review
My hon. Friend will know that the Government took a decision to give a large slug of parliamentary time to the Backbench Business Committee, to be allocated according to the priorities that Back Benchers identify. That was a bold decision for a Government to take. The result is that we have that defence debate today. I hope the Committee notes, as my right hon. Friend the Member for North East Hampshire said, the strong attendance, and that that will mean we have more defence debates on Thursday afternoons in future. I am delighted also to have the opportunity to address the HouseāI have said that once so I will not say it again.
