Written statement made by Earl Howe (Conservative) on Monday, 4 April 2011 in the House of Lords, on behalf of the Department of Health.

Correction to Lords Written Answer

In answering a Parliamentary Question from Lord Hodgson of Astley Abbotts (Official Report, 1 March 2011, col. WA 311), I stated that there is no evidence to suggest that exposure to the small levels of thiomersal contained in influenza vaccines carry any risks to adults or children. I would like to clarify this position. While there is no evidence to suggest that exposure to the small levels of thiomersal contained in influenza vaccines carries any serious risks to adults or children, the possibility of mild, localised allergic reactions has been reported. The product information for all thiomersal-containing vaccines includes relevant warnings concerning this risk. It remains the case that the benefits of vaccination far outweigh any such risk.
