Written statement made by Baroness Northover (Liberal Democrat) on Thursday, 14 July 2011 in the House of Lords, on behalf of the Ministry of Justice.
Justices' of the Peace Act 1949 (Compensation) Regulations as amended
My right honourable friend the Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice (Kenneth Clarke) has made the following Written Ministerial Statement. I am announcing today that I have approved a recommendation by Her Majesty’s Courts and Tribunals Service that the Justice of the Peace Act 1949 (Compensation) Regulations as amended (known as Crombie regulations) are to be revoked by a statutory instrument that will be laid before Parliament on the 14 of July 2011. Under arrangements dating back to 1949 Justices’ Clerks and their assistants are currently entitled to receive higher compensation than other civil servants—in certain circumstances—for loss of office, resettlement and retirement. We have a duty to ensure that we get value for taxpayers’ money and following consultation the Ministry of Justice has decided to revoke this entitlement. All civil servants, including Justices' Clerks and assistants will continue to benefit from the protection of the Civil Service Compensation Scheme. Copies of the response to consultation on the proposal to revoke the Crombie regulations have been placed in the Libraries of both Houses.
