Walking and Cycling: Wales

Question: To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, what recent assessment his Department has made of the effect on walking and cycling rates of the Active Travel (Wales) Act 2013; and what plans he has to bring forward legislative proposals similar to that Act.

Answer: The Department for Transport has been in regular discussion with the Welsh Government in relation to the Active Travel (Wales) Act 2013 throughout its development and implementation. The Department is aware the Act is in the early stage of implementation with Design Guidance being published late last year. The Department will continue to liaise with the Welsh Government on the impact of the Act in Wales, however will not make its own assessment on the effect of the Act on walking and cycling rates because the Act applies to Wales, and the jurisdiction of the Department for Transport in relation to cycling and walking applies to England.
