Marriage: Humanism

Question

To ask the Secretary of State for Justice, if he will take steps to grant legal recognition to humanist marriages under the provisions of the Marriage Act 1949.

Answer

Amending the existing law on marriage to make provision for legally valid humanist ceremonies would involve a range of issues for the Government to consider carefully. We have no current plans to amend this legislation but will keep the position under review.
